An Introduction to Fuengirola & Mijas
Fuengirola is only 30 kilometres from Malaga city and access is easy by road rail or bus. Public transport in the area is excellent.
The town lies in an open bay "Ensenada de Fuengirola" and is one of the most important tourist and holiday centres on the Costa del Sol. The resort attracts large numbers of Spanish and foreign visitors each year. It is particularly busy during the summer months and it is therefore essential to book accommodation before your arrival.
On the border of Fuengirola and Benalmadena is the area and resort of Torreblanca, others are Pueblo Lopez, Pueblo Blanca, and Pueblo Lucia. All of these areas - and others - are built in the style of typical Andalucian villages. There are several kilometres of beach which include the beaches of Carvajal, Torreblanca, Los Boliches, Las Gaviotas, Santa Amalia and El Castillo.
Close to the town centre is Santa Fe de Los Boliches which was originally a small fishing village, now a thriving tourist resort with some of the finest golden beaches in Southern Spain.
Fuengirola's history dates back to Phoenician times when it was no more than a small settlement but it was the Romans that oversaw the first real growth. The development took place around the Roman thermal baths at Torreblanca. The Moors dominated the area around the 10th century building the now famous castle at the mouth of the Fuengirola River which lies to the west of the town.
The centre of the modern town is the Plaza de la constitution although the busiest area without doubt is the Paseo Maratimo which runs along the entire coastline of Fuengirola.
Mijas was once an important mining town in the area rich in Marble. This of course attracted the ancient colonial powers with the Moors naming the town "Mixa" and this is the origin of the present day name.
The village of Mijas is a short 10 minute drive inland from the Coastal resort of Fuengirola, nestling in the foothills of the Sierras de Mijas. The village is famous for its Bull Ring - the only square Bull Ring in Spain. This white Andalucian village simply oozes charm, wander the narrow streets and be fascinated or eat dinner at one of the excellent restaurants, some of the best in the area.
Mijas Costa has some really fine beaches and has been developed carefully retaining much of the charm which originates from the small fishing communities along the coast.
